Palace sack Taylor

Crystal Palace have sacked manager Peter Taylor following their disappointing start to the Coca-Cola Championship season.

Taylor took over at Selhurst Park following Iain Dowie's departure in June last year, but the Eagles failed to mount an expected promotion challenge last term.

They are currently well off the pace again, lying in 19th place with 10 points from their opening 10 games.

A statement on the club's official website, www.cpfc.co.uk, read: "Crystal Palace Football Club announce that Peter Taylor's contract has been terminated with immediate effect."

Palace were booed off following Saturday's lacklustre 1-1 home draw with Hull - ironically the team Taylor left to join the Eagles - but afterwards he maintained he would not be quitting.

However, the 54-year-old did admit he was in danger of the axe from chairman Simon Jordan, saying: "I do appreciate that when managers do go, then they go at this time to give the new manager time to get to know the boys."

Taylor, who starred on the wing for Palace as a player in the 1970s, has also managed Southend, Gillingham, Leicester and Brighton as well as a successful spell in charge of the England Under-21 side.

He was also in caretaker charge of the full England team for one game, a 1-0 friendly defeat by Italy in 2000, and was the first manager to give the captain's armband to David Beckham.

Jordan now has the two-week international break to find a replacement for Taylor, who is the seventh manager to leave Selhurst Park during his seven years at the helm.

Former Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has been linked with the role in recent weeks.
