Pardew knows Bent will be off if Charlton go down

Charlton manager Alan Pardew has praised striker Darren Bent ahead of the club's must-win home clash against Tottenham — but acknowledges he may have to sell him in the summer.

Pardew made him club captain but realises Bent will be the first player to be sold if Charlton are relegated.

Pardew said: "I don't think it is for me to confirm he will go but I don't think it's too far away from that scenario. It's going to be a financial blow to a club like Charlton not to be in the Premiership with the wages we carry. So there are going to have to be sacrifices.

"I've really enjoyed working with him, he is a terrific lad and he is going to be a success. Hopefully, he will be a success at Charlton."

Since Pardew took charge of the strugglers in December, Bent has scored six goals.

He also missed a handful of games with a knee injury and Pardew believes the club would be safe from the drop had he remained fit.

Pardew added: "If he hadn't missed those games we wouldn't be in the relegation zone. Hopefully, he will do some damage in the next two matches."

Apart from his eye for goal, Pardew claims Bent's best trait is his down-to-earth attitude in and around the club — an attribute that will allow the 23-year-old to reach the top.

He said: "He always comes into work with a smile on his face and I think that is a lot of credit to him.

"He has not walked around the training ground like he is the big star here, which he obviously is. He never portrays that and there is a lot to be said for that. He has been brilliant and I can't speak highly enough of him."
