Parker Hammer blow for Curbishley

Scott Parker will miss the rest of West Ham's season with a knee injury in another huge blow to manager Alan Curbishley.

Former Newcastle midfielder Parker, who has made just 10 appearances since joining in a £7million deal last summer, was hurt in a tackle with Cristiano Ronaldo during the Hammers' 2-1 victory over Manchester United in December.

If that was not bad enough for Curbishley, he takes West Ham to Wigan battling to save his relationship with Dean Ashton.

The forward, who was on the substitutes' bench for the 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Wednesday, believes his club boss has cost him his England career.

Ashton has been omitted from Fabio Capello's squad for Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland because he has not played enough games and the former Norwich striker is seething about his lack of first-team action.

In contrast, David Bentley has been told to grab his chance as England's right-hand man — and claim the dropped David Beckham's crown.

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes says Capello's style of play will suit the Ewood midfielder's technical skills and hand the youngster a chance to build a lengthy international career.

Hughes said: "We hope David will nail down his place in the England team. He has worked extremely hard to get in the squad and it would seem there is an opportunity on the right side.

"At that level, you have to be able to deal with the ball in difficult situations, manipulate situations to allow yourself to get out of tight areas of the field and deliver balls when that is demanded. David can do all that and more."
