Part-time caddie Rees bags a round to save Mrs Calcavecchia's blushes

What's all this about Mark Calcavecchia having to find a caddie at short notice?
Brenda Calcavecchia opened her hotel room curtains, saw the sheeting rain and howling wind and decided that humping her husband's bag around a golf course for five hours wasn't her idea of fun.

But wasn't he due to tee off at 7.25am?
Not much time to hire a replacement.
No, but the pro shop found him local man Peter Rees, a part-time caddie on the Birkdale links who usually looks after tourists. He was some use to Calcavecchia then.
After all, a caddie is more than a bag carrier, isn't he?
Absolutely. He has the trust of the player in the choice of club and the yardage to the pin. So did Rees do that for his man? Well, he could have.
He had a lot more local knowledge than Mrs Calcavecchia but he wasn't asked to do anything other than carry the clubs, wipe the grips and hold the umbrella over his man.
Even so, a 76 shot in the worst of the conditions suggests he did a decent job. He did, and he enjoyed it, too.
Rees said: 'Not many amateur caddies get the chance to caddie at the Open - and for a former Open champion. I'm chuffed to bits. I loved it. The two other caddies helped me and gave me advice.'
So will he have the bag today? That depends on Mrs C. and the weather.
