Party-boy junior tennis player Evans gets a record LTA ban

One of Britain's leading junior tennis players has been hit with a record suspension for staying out until the early hours on the day of his doubles second round at Wimbledon last week. Dan Evans, the British junior No 3 who made his main tour debut at the Artois Championships at Queen's Club last month, has been stripped of all funding and support by the Lawn Tennis Association for four months.

His Wimbledon partner Daniel Smethurst, Britain's No 2 from Lancashire, has been hit by a similar penalty, but only for two months due to his previous good character.

The punishments make it an embarrassing hat-trick for the country's leading boys this year, as No 1 Marcus Willis was sent home from the Australian Open in January for bad timekeeping and ill-discipline.

The LTA have finally run out of patience with Evans, an 18-year-old from Solihull who is squandering his natural talent. He was widely seen with Smethurst at a party in a nightclub in Wimbledon town centre until past 3am last Thursday and they went on to lose their match the same day in straight sets.

The venue was hosting a function for on-site IBM workers at the tournament and was also attended by staff from the Referee's Office.

In June Evans was also spotted on CCTV cameras coming back to the lodgings at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton at 4am after his one-sided defeat at Queen's by Xavier Malisse.

This calls into question whether he should have been allowed to play at Wimbledon as he had already been given a warning earlier this year for his general attitude. Smethurst's late night escapade was considered out of character, so he escaped more lightly.

Nonetheless, after the euphoria surrounding Wimbledon girls' champion Laura Robson it underlines concerns about the discipline of Britain's young tennis players and whether they are being spoiled by the governing body. Some were caught boasting on websites last year about big nights out and Andy Murray has also criticised the approach of some.

The pair will now have to pay for themselves entirely if they are to play in the U.S. Open juniors at the end of next month. They are banned from all LTA high performance training facilities, will have no LTA coaching support and no assistance with wildcards into tournaments.
