Pattinson receives shock call

Andrew Flintoff will bat at No7 in his comeback Test but England sprung a far bigger surprise today by summoning Darren Pattinson to Headingley.

Pattinson, born in Grimsby, played club cricket in Australia before making his first-class debut for Victoria last year at the age of 28.

He has taken a stack of wickets this season for Notts and England recently included him in their provisional squad for September's Champions Trophy. But calling up the Anglo-Aussie rather than sending for Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones or Steve Harmison is a real punt.

They had already sent for Chris Tremlett because of concern over Ryan Sidebottom's dodgy back. And when Anderson also complained of stiffness in the back following this morning's practice session, their plans for tomorrow's Second Test were thrown into further confusion.

Flintoff is certain to face South Africa, with wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose being promoted to No6 if the selectors decide they want to include five rather than four bowlers.

"I've always seen Freddie more as a No7," said skipper Michael Vaughan. "I think his style of play is very much suited to that position,"
