Pearce backs Lampard

Stuart Pearce is convinced England midfielder Frank Lampard will silence the Wembley boos.

The England Under 21 manager said the abuse the Chelsea star received from some fans when he appeared as a second-half substitute on Saturday was 'totally ridiculous'.

Abused: Lampard was booed by some fans

Pearce, preparing his side in Cork for tonight's European Championship qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, was in the England side when John Barnes faced similar chants from his own fans and he is certain Lampard's ability will pull him through.

He said: 'I know Frank — I played with him at West Ham

for two years so I'm privy to what a good character he is and what a great professional he is. Things like that won't affect him because eventually supporters will sit back and realise what a good job he's doing for the country. 'He's a fantastic individual, a fantastic player and it disappoints me if I hear an England player getting booed. 'I was there the night John Barnes was booed at Wembley but he responded in the way I imagine Frank will, with his football. That'll shut people up. It's short-sighted of people, but sometimes in modern-day football they seem to need to have a scapegoat. It's sad.'
