Pearce is one victory from permanent Under 21 job

Stuart Pearce will be offered the England Under 21 job on a permanent basis if he guides his team to the last four of the European Championship in Holland.

Pearce's team will qualify for a semi-final against the host nation if England beat Serbia in their final Group B game tomorrow.

England expects: Stuart Pearce could get job full time

It is understood that such progress would be judged as a relative success by the FA.

Pearce has so far remained coy about his own future as he is keen on a return to P remiership management, but the former Manchester City boss has stated that he thinks the Under 21 job should be full-time.

Last night, FA director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking said: "We've always said we'll wait until the end of the tournament before we make an announcement. But I think Stuart has organised them really well out here.

"It's really down to the professional-game members of our main board to agree the sort of contract that we can offer. But generally speaking, all of us feel the post should be full-time."

Pearce has only been in charge of the junior England side since January and is due to leave the post when this tournament ends a week today.

An opening goalless draw against the Czech Republic in Arnhem last Monday hardly set pulses racing but a thrilling 2-2 result against tournament favourites Italy has placed England in a great position to qualify when they meet a Serbian team already assured of first place in the group.

One of the heroes of Thursday night's performance was Reading striker Leroy Lita, who scored his country's second goal after missing a late penalty in the first game.

Lita revealed last night that he received abusive text messages from members of the public who had got hold of his mobile phone number but added that it only spurred him on.

"They left me a few messages and texts," he said. "I had a lot of stick from random people after the penalty. They were giving me a hard time, but I like it.

"I just wanted to get back on to the pitch and play again."
