Peel joins fat cats with switch to Sale

Llanelli scrum half Dwayne Peel will join the English Premiership's £200,000-a-year elite at Sale next season — picking up a pay rise of around 50 per cent.

It was not what the Welsh Rugby Union wanted, one of their leading lights cashing in his chips only four days after the Union warned that Welsh players opting to play outside the Principality will be jeopardising their international careers.

On the move: Peel

Far from putting their policy to the test, Peel, 26, will be guaranteed immunity.

Head coach Warren Gatland said: "I will not penalise any of our current internationals who will not have been aware of the proposed new strategy until last week. It would be unfair, as we were aware that Dwayne's negotiations were already well advanced when we made our statement.

"But it is important that all young Welsh players know that we want to invest in them with the aim of realising that investment on the field for Wales. The structures are being built here in Wales and we know we can nurture and develop the talent fully."

Peel, the Lions Test scrum half in New Zealand three years ago, has signed for three seasons. The deal will leave Sale's uncapped Richard Wigglesworth wondering about his future at the club so soon after his elevation to No 3 in the England rankings.
