Peter Lawrie wins dramatic play-off to claim title in Spain

Dubliner Peter Lawrie made it three Irish wins in a row on the European Tour when he beat Ignacio Garrido at the second hole of a dramatic play-off for the Spanish Open in Seville.

After four birdies in his last six holes Lawrie looked set to win without sudden death until Garrido closed with a 30-foot birdie putt to tie on 15 under par.

Then it was Garrido who was poised to take a title lifted by his father Antonio in 1972 - that has never been done in Tour history - when he pitched to three feet.

However, Lawrie this time converted a 25-footer for the hole to be shared in birdie threes and then Garrido saw his next pitch to the same green spin back into the water.

Five years ago Lawrie lost a play-off for the same title to England's Kenneth Ferrie. That was the closest he had come to victory in 174 previous events, while Garrido became a runner-up in the event for the third time in his career.
