Phillips wants a two-year deal to stay at The Hawthorns

Kevin Phillips has warned West Brom that the prospect of a Barclays Premier League return will not keep him at the club if they do not offer him an attractive new deal.

The former England striker will become a free agent this summer and wants a two-year contract after finishing the season as the club's top scorer with 24.

Talks were put on hold while Tony Mowbray's team focused on winning the title but will resume this week. Albion initially offered only a one-year deal.

Phillips said: 'I am not going to say I will definitely be around next season. This is going to be my last contract and it needs to be right. I am not going to sign for the sake of it. I would like two years.

'We will talk and I am sure we will have different views but hopefully it will get sorted.

'There are other options. Nobody is stupid about that, but I am settled and happy where I am.'

Phillips, 34, added: 'Once you cross that age barrier of 30 in football, people just expect you are going to fade out and retire into the background. I have proved a lot of people wrong.'

Phillips is not the only West Brom player out of contract this summer and Mowbray is hoping midfielder Zoltan Gera and defender Martin Albrechtsen also sign new deals.

The West Brom boss said: 'We will make them offers that we think are fair but the bottom line is that it is down to their advisers. I can't put a gun to their heads.'

There are some positive signs. Roman Bednar will be signed shortly from Hearts for £2.5million after his loan move to the Hawthorns and Luke Moore is set to join for £3.5m from Aston Villa following his temporary switch.
