Piggott ready for his big day

Newmarket finally has its chance to pay tribute to Lester Piggott this afternoon. The 11-time champion jockey will be the guest of honour at the course which stages a card where six of the seven races are named after Classic winners that the legendary rider partnered to victory on the Rowley Mile.

The programmme was originally scheduled for May but had to be postponed when Piggott was rushed into hospital while in Switzerland after suffering a heart scare.

Piggott: Tribute

Piggott will be accompanied by wife Susan, daughter Tracy and young son Jamie.

Also in attendance will be old colleagues and friends including Julie Cecil, Jimmy Lindley, Joe Mercer, Peter O'Sullevan, Geoff Wragg and Peter Walwyn.

Lindley said: "You only see riders like Lester maybe once every 100 years. He is an icon really."

Reflecting on the legendary jockey's recent health worries, Lindley added: "He is doing very well. The only difference is that he has gone white!

"His treatment was successful and he looks almost ready to ride again."

Piggott, who will present the trophy for the feature Victor Chandler Nijinsky Handicap as well as being interviewed by Tracy and O'Sullevan before the first race, will also receive a framed montage of his seven Guineas winners.
