Plato is pipped by a pile-up

Jason Plato, who led the British Touring Car Championship going into the final three-race meeting at Thruxton, surrendered the title by just three points to Italy's Fabrizio Giovanardi yesterday.

Giovanardi (Vauxhall) claimed two victories and a second place, while Briton Plato (Seat) could only manage two runners-up finishes and a fourth as he lost his nine-point advantage.

Jason Plato: Surrendered the title

Giovanardi ended with 300 points from 30 races. Plato was denied the chance to stage a grandstand finish in the last of yesterday's races when a red flag brought a premature end to proceedings after a pile-up as he was about to move into third position.

Plato said: "It was very close, but it all hung on the final race where I didn't get a very good start, so unfortunately that will have to go down to me.

"I knew that if the Vauxhalls came past then they would gang up as a team. It was a great fight for the championship but it just didn't go our way. The best man won on the day."
