PM-to-be Brown swaps red for Blues to join in Cup celebrations

PM-in-waiting Gordon Brown dropped his red allegiance for a few hours to show his support for the Blues when he visited FA Cup winners Chelsea on Sunday.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, who is set to take over from Tony Blair as Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister next month, spent an hour chatting to players, staff and fans at a charity football event for PiggyBankKids organised by his wife Sarah.

While talking to Chelsea staff he congratulated them on the FA Cup success the previous day.

The event involved a six-a-side competition with teams coming from various companies or organisations who all made a donation to participate.

Well known personalities who played in the event included Chelsea supporter and comedian David Baddiel, playwright and comedian Patrick Marber and Sir Gus O'Donnell, Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service.

Projects that have benefited from PiggyBankKids' support recently include mentoring matches for school children, sports provision for youngsters with learning difficulties and a pioneering new laboratory set up to help solve life-threatening pregnancy problems and save newborn lives.
