Plain clothes and uniform officers will be in and around Old Trafford, working with stadium staff to identify any troublemakers and deal with them as quickly as possible.

Manchester City club officials have warned their supporters that any disruption to Sunday's tribute to the 23 people who died will not be tolerated and have threatened to hand out lifetime bans.

City boss and former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has urged Blues supporters not to repeat the interruptions which marred the silence before England's match with Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday night.

"I believe in being respectful and I know Manchester City Football club has been built on respect," Eriksson told City's website.

"It was disappointing that the period of silence at the England game was disrupted and I hope everybody on Sunday will show maturity and respect for everyone who died at Munich.

"For anything else to happen would be a huge disappointment."

Ms McCormick said additional police patrols would also be deployed in the city centre for the Premier League game.

She said: ""Our main aim for Sunday's match is for the game to go ahead without any major disruption and be an enjoyable experience for everyone who attends.

"Anyone who may be thinking of coming to the match with the intention of causing trouble should stay away. My officers will take robust action against troublemakers so this minority of people do not spoil the day for the true supporters.

Boss Eriksson has appealed to City's support

"We have been working closely with both clubs to ensure the day passes off peacefully.

"GMP is used to policing high profile matches and this is no exception. We wish both teams the best of luck for the match and hope that supporters of both Manchester United and Manchester City unite to ensure the day is a fitting occasion to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich disaster."

Manchester City will have their own stewards at the game and have promised to co-operate with their rivals in identifying any culprits who break the silence.

City's Official Supporters' Club had requested a minute's applause rather than a silence and then asked for the tribute to be held at the end of the match but have now asked their members to abide by the arrangements.
