Police probe accounts as Ferrari row revs up

Ferrari-Gate took on a dramatic new twist yesterday as it emerged police were trawling through the bank accounts of sabotage suspect Nigel Stepney.

Officers are said to have checked accounts at Italian banks and have also made a request to check records in Britain.

Suspect: Stepney

They are looking for payments which the former Ferrari chief mechanic may have received in return for allegedly passing on a top-secret dossier to Grand Prix rivals McLaren.

Details of the new probe emerged as Stepney's Italian lawyer, Sonia Bartolini, revealed they would be pressing for an investigation of Ferrari, whom they accuse of being behind a high-speed car chase of the mechanic and his girlfriend.

She said: "My client was able to make a note of the number plate of the car involved and we are trying to trace it. Nigel is all the more convinced by the car chase that this is all a dirty tricks ploy by Ferrari."

The team called in prosecutors after discovering fuel tanks of two cars had been laced with a mystery powder ahead of May's Monte Carlo Grand Prix.
