Pompey boss Harry in a hurry to resuscitate his Wembley wobblers

Harry Redknapp and Gareth Southgate may have very different finales to the season in prospect but both have vowed to get tough.

FA Cup Final-bound Redknapp heads back to Portsmouth's training ground this week after missing the build-up to this third successive defeat to be with the Lampard family.

He must get the tracksuit on and lift his players out of their comfort zone.

Aside from a bright opening 20 minutes, they were a pushover for Middlesbrough, whogot the win that preserves their Barclays Premier League status.

Mark Schwarzer will not have had many easier games in his 331 Premier League appearances — the most of any foreigner.

Redknapp admitted he has already picked his Wembley starting XI, but no one deserves a cup final start on this showing, with the exception of Lassana Diarra.

"I need to get on the training ground to shake a few people up," warned the Pompey boss. "I need to get among them and get them closing down, get a bit of sharpness back, brighten them up.

"I don't really think getting to the final has caused players to take their eyes off the ball. I've already picked my team, but the players don't know what it is."

Chris Riggott marked his shock return from a loan spell with Stoke to bury Fabio Rochemback's corner past Jamie Ashdown five minutes before the break after losing Sylvain Distin.

Glen Johnson was equally guilty when Stewart Downing took corner duties and found Tuncay Sanli just after half-time.

Riggott had to turn his back on Tony Pulis and his team-mates of the past two months and the experience has clearly opened his eyes to Boro's plight and the challenges facing his former team-mate Southgate.

Riggott, whose last Boro goal was against Steaua Bucharest in the UEFA Cup semi-final two years ago, said: "There is a difference in atmosphere. You come from a team winning every week, you have that winning mentality and the lads are buoyant. They are mostly English lads and it is the way of the world that in the Premier League there's a lot of foreign lads and it is not the same.

"I had a million texts from friends and family who were surprised I came back, but Boro pay my wages. It was strange and I'm gutted I missed Stoke's last game, but we won here and the picture has changed, so we'll have a chat."

The meeting with Riggott is one of many for Southgate who is planning to make his mark on the club during the close season.

Moving on the likes of Rochemback, Schwarzer, George Boateng, Gaizka Mendieta and Gary O'Neil will allow him to change personnel but he is planning a change in management style, too.

Southgate said: "This is the time to say 'I am no longer Gareth Southgate the footballer'. When you manage players you played with, it is very hard.

"I have an open door policy and might have to review that. I love working with them and they know I would do anything for them, but sometimes they have to realise where they are in their careers and that we are 14th. Perhaps we're not as good as we think.

"I played people on reputation and as the season has gone on, I tried to rectify that.

"We need to sit down at the start of next season and explain what it takes to be successful."
