Pompey boss Redknapp targets Chelsea duo Bridge and Wright-Phillips

Harry Redknapp's bid to rescue the careers of England's fringe stars is set to continue with his move for Wayne Bridge.

The Portsmouth boss has already lodged an inquiry for £10million Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, frozen out from the Stamford Bridge and England picture.

And Bridge emerged yesterday as another major part of Redknapp's plans ahead of the new season with Peter Crouch in the bag. Although he is a fan of wantaway Reading star Nicky Shorey, Redknapp's interest appears to have cooled.

Bridge, however, is another matter with Redknapp keen on his crossing ability along with his defensive discipline. Bridge started just nine games for Chelsea last season as then boss Avram Grant relied heavily on former Arsenal star Ashley Cole.

With Luis Felipe Scolari having taken over at Stamford Bridge there seems little chance that the situation will change while at Portsmouth Bridge is set to figure far more prominently.

The south coast club's current left-back is Iceland international Hermann Hreidarrson, whose debut season at Fratton Park impressed many. But while Bridge is only 27 Hreidarsson turned 34 last week.

Bridge has also been linked with Newcastle who need competition for Jose Enrique but Redknapp appears to be in pole position after going cold on a move for another former Chelsea star Celestine Babayaro and Reading's Nicky Shorey.

Portsmouth have also been linked with a move for Monaco playmaker Jeremy Menez. The gifted 21-year-old is rated at around £10million and is said to possess the midfield guile to unlock top flight defences.

Elsewhere highly-rated Pompey midfielder Sulley Muntari is being tracked by Spurs and Italian giants Juventus. Muntari has made a massive impact since moving to the Premier League and has already played for Chelsea and Arsenal before moving to the south coast.

Having picked up an FA Cup winners' medal last season the Ghanaian midfielder has insisted he wants to stay at Fratton Park, but the Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri is willing to pay around £12million for him.
