Pompey striker Kanu settles for new one-year deal at Fratton Park

Nigerian striker Kanu has finally settled for signing a new one-year contract
at - just before their season starts on Sunday with the FA Community
Shield match against at Wembley.
New challenge: Kanu has signed a fresh contract with Portsmouth
Kanu scored winning goals for Pompey in both the FA Cup semi-final and final last season and used those statistics as material to barter for a longer-term deal at the age of 32.
But he has settled in the end for exactly the same as this time last year - a
new one-year deal with an option for an extra year if he plays a certain number
of matches, believed to be around 20, this season.
Pompey, who have signed £11million Peter Crouch to partner £7million Jermain
Defoe up front, would not budge on Kanu's demands for a longer contract because
of the player's age and vulnerability to injury.
He said: "I'm delighted to have signed. I've been with these players for two
years now and the spirit is fantastic.
"The manager Harry Redknapp is the main man and I love the fans. They are the
best in the league, like a 12th man in the team.
"And I want to score more goals than last season (only four in the Premier League) and more like my first season here (12). Above all I want to give 100 per cent all the time."
Kanu was signed by Redknapp on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion in
August 2006 after high-profile spells with Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal.
He is currently sidelined by a thigh injury and is battling to be fit for Sunday's Wembley clash.
He added: "I'm doing a programme with the physios and getting better, so I wouldn't want to rule myself out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed."
