Portsmouth will not increase their £9million offer for Liverpool's Peter Crouch — but may be willing to restructure it.

Sportsmail first revealed how Portsmouth wanted Crouch and valued the England striker at £8m. They increased their offer to Anfield earlier this week in the hope of completing the deal.

The offer, which is £7m downpayment plus add-ons, has been rejected by Liverpool, even though Crouch has only one year remaining on his contract.

'The offer is more than generous,' said a deal insider. 'It is a sign of Portsmouth's ambition that they are prepared to smash their transfer record for the second summer in succession. They want Crouch to lead the attack in their UEFA Cup bid.'

One consideration would be restructuring the offer by increasing their downpayment — but the total offer will remain the same.

Liverpool co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have, significantly, announced jointly that work on the club's new £350m stadium is to begin imminently. Contractors Laing O'Rourke had been instructed to ‘commence enabling work’ on the site.

Final planning permission for a 60,000-capacity ground on Stanley Park was rubber-stamped last Thursday and work to prepare the site began Monday.
