Porto kicked out of Champions League over bribery of referees in 2003-04

Porto have been banned from next season's Champions League after allegedly bribing referees four years ago, when Jose Mourinho was their coach.

The allegations relate to Porto's 2-0 win against Estrela da Amadora and their 0-0 draw with Beira Mar in the 2003-04 season, when Mourinho's side won the Champions League and domestic double.

The club say they intend to appeal to the UEFA appeals body. Disciplinary action was taken last month against Porto by Portuguese soccer authorities over the case.

They were docked six points and fined 150,000 euros (£120,000) after a lengthy investigation that became known as 'Golden Whistle'.

But Porto won the Portuguese title for the third time in a row, 14 points ahead of Lisbon club Sporting, so the points penalty had little impact.

Club president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa was suspended for two years by the Portuguese disciplinary commission and fined 10,000 euros (£8,000) but Mourinho, who went on to manage Chelsea and was appointed Inter Milan coach on Tuesday, was never mentioned in the investigation.

Chelsea and Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira believes Porto, for whom he was playing in the season in question, will fight their Champions League exclusion.

'I have a lot of affection for Porto and they have the people to sort these problems out,' said Ferreira, currently with the national squad training for Euro 2008. 'Portugal has a great image and we have to put these types of things to one side.

Porto must appeal officially before Friday night. Benfica are the club who stand to benefit should Porto's exclusion stand, having finished fourth in the SuperLiga. They would automatically receive a Champions League place.
