Poulter's mission to win a major

Open Championship runner-up Ian Poulter hopes his performance at Royal Birkdale will act as a springboard to future success.

Poulter, who tees off later today in the first round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio, said: "I'm 32, and I think the average age of major winners is about 32. The mental process of being out there and playing worked well in The Open and, hopefully, I can take that forward in the big tournaments.

"I've always believed in my ability. I've told people I can win a major.

"I've always known that deep inside. But it hasn't ever come out. It's refreshing to know it's not all just words."
