Powell is quick to deliver on promise

World record holder Asafa Powell was as good as his word on Tuesday night when he ran the fastest 100metres of the year in Belgrade.

The Jamaican had promised a sub-10sec run for his first race of the season and delivered in 9.97sec. Great Britain's Mark Lewis-Francis was third in 10.19sec and Jason Gardener fifth in 10.28sec, both running their first individual 100m races of the year.

Powell: Ran 9.97sec in Belgrade

Powell, 24, who has recovered from a bout of knee tendinitis, said: "I'm satisfied. It's going to be a long season and if it was 9.99sec I would still have been happy. It's the first race so you have to try to get everything back to normal - what a relief."
