Premier League: Kia threats over Tevez don't scare us

Premier League chiefs insist they will not be intimidated by Kia Joorabchian's threats to produce "explosive" evidence supporting Sheffield United in their appeal to the High Court tomorrow over the Carlos Tevez ruling.

The Argentina striker's agent claims to have documents which could help the Yorkshire club's cause in their fight for compensation and is considering handing it over to their lawyers.

Joorabchian has threatened to help Sheffield United in their legal battle

Joorabchian is angry the Premier League blocked Tevez's proposed £20million transfer to Manchester United because they do not recognise his company's claim to the 23-year-old's economic rights.

The whole saga is now threatening to run all summer as the various parties involved refuse to back down.

While the arguing continues, Tevez has tried to keep his mind on his game and was again in sparkling form for Argentina in the early hours of today in their 3-0 win over Mexico in the semi-finals of the Copa America.

Joorabchian wants his share of the transfer fee to United, who remain adamant the striker will be theirs by the start of next season.

West Ham have refused to cancel Tevez's contract with them — as they did with Javier Mascherano before he moved to Liverpool — and feel they are entitled to all of the money coming from Old Trafford.

The Premier League are also standing firm, aware that if they allow Joorabchian to pocket a substantial amount of money for the transfer, that will prove a third-party agreement still exists between the businessman and West Ham.

That agreement was supposed to have been torn up when a three-man panel concluded the Hammers had broken two Premier League rules and fined them £5.5million in April.

League bosses remain unconcerned by the prospect of Joorabchian joining forces with Sheffield United and a Premier League source said that because West Ham pleaded guilty to the two charges brought against them any additional information would be of little consequence.

New evidence, claimed the source, may provide further confirmation the club broke the rules but that issue was not in doubt due to the guilty pleas.

The tribunal had to decide whether the offence warranted a fine or points deduction.

But Sheffield United will take the opposite view claiming had Joorabchian's evidence been available at the original tribunal West Ham would have been docked points and relegated in their place.

The Yorkshire club are appealing in the High Court against an arbitration panel's decision to dismiss their claim against the Premier League and Sheffield's lawyers contacted Joorabchian to ask for assistance.

Two weeks ago, the panel rejected Sheffield's claim for a new disciplinary commission to be set up to deal with West Ham over the Tevez affair.

The Premier League have described their High Court case as "a very narrow window of appeal" claiming they expect the matter "to be expedited as quickly as possible".

As well as the offer of help to Sheffield United, Joorabchian's camp have also contacted FIFA in a bid to get them to help resolve the dispute over Tevez.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez believes Yossi Benayoun will be an ideal replacement for Luis Garcia, who is now at Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool have agreed a £5m deal to sign Benayoun from West Ham and Benitez said: "Like Luis, he is a very technical, clever player with a lot of game intelligence."
