Premier League Rumour Mill: Arsenal want defender to return, Chelsea eye Millwall youngster

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will not allow Birmingham to extend the loan deal of highly-rated young defender Johan Djourou in January.

The Gunners boss let the prospect move to St Andrews in the summer so he can gain valuable Premier League experience.

But he wants his back at the Emirates Stadium at the turn of the year as cover for top player like Kolo Toure, who will be heading for African Nations Cup duty, and skipper William Gallas.

"I wanted Johan to be experienced and I wanted him to play," Wenger said of the loan deal.

He could be willing to farm out another teenage sensation as well with Southampton close to agreeing loan terms for 16-year-old winger Kieran Gibbs.

Manager George Burley gave an early chance to Tom Huddlestone, now at Tottenham, and West Ham target Giles Barnes while at Derby and knows how to bring the best out of young potential.

Chelsea have been given permission to speak to Millwall's 15-year-old academy keeper Sam Walker after having a £500,000 bid accepted.

And Birmingham manager Steve Bruce hopes Carson Yeung's imminent takeover of the Premier League club will mean he can go on a January spending spree.

Middlesbrough and Reading, meanwhile, are interested in Wolves' Seyi Olofinjana and Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson hopes to lure ex-Brazil right-back Jose Ze Maria.

Rumour of the day: Micky Adams has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant managerial role at Gillingham.

No chance: Burnley are determined to keep hold ok striker Kyle Lafferty in January when they expect a third attempt by Fulham to sign the Northern ireland international.
