Premier League Rumour Mill: City and Toon take lead in Eidur chase

Manchester City and Newcastle have emerged as the front runners to sign Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen after he rejected the chance to join West Ham.

The Iceland international seems surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp following the arrival of Thierry Henry from Arsenal in the summer.

But although the Catalan giants accepted a £6.5m bid from the Hammers, Gudjohnsen did not fancy the idea of plying his trade at Upton Park.

West Ham may enjoy more success in their move for Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano after his £4m move to City collapsed.

Sven Goran Eriksson, meanwhile, is still hoping to tie up a deal for £5m-rated Livorno keeper Marco Amelia before the start of the season as City are short of goalkeepers.

Albert Luque doesn't fancy staying on Tyneside even though Magpies manager Sam Allardyce has given him the chance to revive his abortive stint with the Toon Army.

The former Deportivo La Coruna star fancies a move abroad and Feyenoord and La Liga outfit Levante are his preferred destinations.

Everton are set to sign Manuel Fernandes after Benfica accepted their £6m bid for a 50 per cent stake while Birmingham continue to close in on Arsenal defender Johan Djourou, who they want on loan for the season.

Blues are after more players even if he also lands £6million forward Mido from Spurs and boss Steve Bruce said: "That will not be the end of things.

"It's getting near the start of the season but if you remember this time last year we got our three best signings right before the big kick-off in the three Arsenal boys Nicklas Bendtner, Fabrice Muamba and Sebastian Larsson. We are pleased with what we have done and brought in. Rest assured, we haven't finished yet."

Rumour of the day: Chelsea will step up their bid for Seville right back Daniel Alves as soon as Arjen Robben completes his move to Real Madrid.

No chance: Middlesbrough insist the will not sell Yakubu even if they win the battle for Tottenham striker Mido.
