Premier League Rumour Mill: Reading ready to welcome back Sidwell

Reading manager Steve Coppell Sidwell has admitted he would welcome back midfielder Steve Sidwell at the Madejski Stadium.

The Royals lost the services of the playmaker when he joined Chelsea as a free agent in the summer but the move has not worked out well as first-team chances have been limited.

Frozen out: Sidwell

Coppell would not mind taking the linchpin of his engine-room back to Berkshire and said: "I would fully anticipate that we will supplement the squad in January.

"I want good players and Siddy is a good player. He's one of many I would love to bring here."

Sidwell was not among the 16 players that Chelsea took to Old Trafford yesterday when they lost 2-0 to Manchester United.

And Coppell added: "It's ironic that he is not getting a game there when we very much wanted him to have games here."

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto has admitted he may quit the Emirates to join Valencia or Juventus. The Brazilian was overlooked for the captaincy, which has gone to William Gallas, and is unable to break his way into the first-team on a regular basis at the moment.

And he said: "I am not sure if I will re-sign my contract when it runs out in 18 months. I know there has been interest from Valencia and Juventus. We will see but I still have an ambition to win the Champions League with Arsenal."

Stoke are favourites to sign West Ham central defender Calum Davenport on loan for the rest of the season. He has enjoyed previous stints with Tottenham, Norwich and Coventry among his travels.

Watford are struggling in their attempts to get former Leicester defender Jordan Stewart to sign a new contract and manager Aidy Boothroyd admitted: he was my first signing and I'd like him to stay but he if declines then that is fine."

Ryan Cresswell has joined Sheffield United on loan from neighbours Rotherham and Liverpool goalkeeper Dave Martin, son of West Ham legend Alvin, is wanted by Yeovil.

Rumour of the day: Middlesbrough want former Portsmouth and Coventry striker John Aloisi to join them. he is a free agent after leaving Spanish club Alaves.

No chance: Burnley are trying to hold on to teenage striker John Kofi, who is wanted by Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.
