Premier League Rumour Mill: Reading to offer Shorey huge deal to stay

Reading will offer Nicky Shorey the biggest pay deal in the club's history to stop him joining West Ham in the next transfer window.

The England left-back is coveted by the Hammers and they are prepared to meet the Royals £6million valuation if they can't work out a player plus cash deal which would send hayden Mullins in the opposite direction.

Target: Nicky Shorey

Reading have made a slow start to the new campaign and their 3-0 home defeat against the East Enders and the fear is that Shorey will depart if the club are in trouble at the turn of the year.

Bolton defender Ivan Campo is staying at the Reebok Stadium after snubbing a move to the Championship to play with Sheffield United.

But Leeds look more likely to succeed in the loan market as their move for Graham Kavanagh,. who is out of favour at Sunderland, is set to be rubber-stamped by Black Cats boss Roy Keane.

Leeds have also signed Portuguese winger Filipe Da Costa from Greek side Lonikos on a free, though he is waiting international clearance.

Celtic and Southampton are tracking Colchester's Cameroon-born defender George Elokobi while Hull want Wigan defender Fitz Hall after completing the signing of Jay-Jay Okocha.

Ipswich are planning a loan move for 19-year-old Aston Villa defender Stephen O'Halloran while neighbours Norwich have taken ex-Cameroon international Lucien Mettomo on trial at Carrow Road.

Wolves keeper Graham Stack, meanwhile, has had his loan deal from Reading extended for a further four months.

Rumour of the day: Michael Ballack may move to Real Madrid in January after being left out of Chelsea's Champions League plans.

No chance: Charlton want Tottenham teenager Terry Dixon on loan but Spurs may keep the exciting prospect under their protective wing as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
