Premiership Rumour Mill: Pompey transfer boost

Harry Redknapp has been assured he will have sizeable transfer funds available in the summer even though Portsmouth are gearing up for a move away from Fratton Park.

Owner Sacha Gaydamak has told his manager that he wants to strengthen the squad significantly at the end of the season.

Pompey are on the brink of finishing in the top ten in the top flight for the first time since 1955 and have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.

But how much cash is available could depend whether or they face UEFA Cup commitments next season.

Redknapp has worked wonders with a painfully thin squad this season and will need to strengthen it to maintain Pompey's top ten status.

But if they are involved in Europe the demands will be even greater on his players are more recruits will be needed to deal with the added fixtures.

The South Coast club are lining up a fresh move for attacking midfielder Achille Emana after Redknapp travelled to France to watch the Cameroon international play for Toulouse in a 3-2 defeat against Rennes.

He also had the chance to assess the form of Oliver Thomert, who he watched last year while he was still at Lens and said: "We do need more pace in the team. That's an area we're looking at. But it's not easy to find anyone."

Reading are ready to make a fresh bid for Ghana defender John Mensah after checking him in the same game while Manchester City are interested in 22-year-old Nigeria forward John Utaka.

Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura won't be quitting Parkhead for the Premiership. The Japanese playmaker scored the injury-time winner which gave the Bhoys the title in a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday and has been so effective at home and in the Champions League this season he was named the SPFA player of the year.

But he insisted: "I'll definitely be at Celtic Park next season, hopefully to lift my third championship in a row. It has been good playing well in the Champions League and we've won the league again. Now our aim is to win the Scottish Cup."

Rumour of the day: Bolton are close to signing 27-year-old Real Madrid defender Paco Pavon on a four-year deal.

No chance: Mikel Arteta will resist the lure of La Liga to stay at Everton.
