Premiership Rumour Mill: Robson targets United midfielder Richardson

New Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson wants to lure Kieran Richardson away from his former club Manchester United.

The Bramall Lane boss has already pleaded with top stars Paddy Kenny, Michael Tongue and Phil Jagielka not to quit the Blades following their relegation from the Premiership.

And he hopes a couple of impressive signings like Richardson on long-term deals will help clinch promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt.

Harry Redknapp is ready to make more signings after landing Sylvain Distin on a free transfer at Portsmouth.

Middlesbrough's out-of contract striker Mark Viduka and Titus Bramble, released by Newcastle, are top of his shopping list.

"Mark will make up his own mind. He has plenty of offers but we are looking to improve all around," said the Pompey boss. "We will need more goals and we have the money available to spend. The chairman is ambitious."

Charlton defender Hermann Hreidarsson is also being monitored and Redknapp added: "Hermann is a player I like very much. I heard West Ham bid £2m for him not long ago and he's another one to watch out for."

First, though he is set to clinch the signing from Udinese of Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari for a £7million club record fee and he added: "We are very close to getting him and I am keeping my fingers crossed.

"He is a fantastic midfielder — strong and quick with an eye for goal and he is only 22."

Wigan, Birmingham and Fulham are all interested in Antoine Sibierski after he rejected a new one-year deal at Newcastle while Benfica are interested in Bolton striker El-Hadji Diouf.

Birmingham are interested in Kris Commons after he rejected a new contract at Nottingham Forest, Arsenal back-up keeper Mart Poom has turned down a move to Rangers while Aston Villa may make a £1.5m bid for Kilmarnock forward Steven Naismith.

Villarreal and Juventus both want Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze while Sunderland are targeting Blackburn defender Andy Todd and Leciester want Leeds striker Richard Cresswell.

Rumour of the day: Ryan Giggs will make a last gasp bid to persuade fellow Wales international Gareth Bale to join Manchester United rather than Tottenham.

No chance: Wigan striker Henri Camara does not want to stay at the JJB Stadium and wants to join Paris St Germain so he can be nearer his family.
