Prodrive choice brings F1 debut closer for Paffett

Britain's Gary Paffett is in line to make his long-awaited entry into Formula One next year. The 26-year-old — and fellow McClaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa — are expected to be unveiled as Prodrive's choices ahead of the team's debut in 2008, if the newcomers strike a deal with McLaren.

Prodrive boss David Richards is hoping to outline his plans at July's British Grand Prix, with McLaren likely to provide the car, engines and two drivers.

Paffett: Ready to make a name for himself in F1

Both Essex racer Paffett and Spaniard De la Rosa, 26, were overlooked this season for Lewis Hamilton, McLaren's rookie sensation who has finished on the podium in his first three races.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis says no deal has yet been done with Prodrive but added: "I'd never rule out having a partnership with another F1 team."
