Pryce new deal as Saints ward off code switch

St Helens yesterday killed off any chance of their outstanding Great Britain Test back Leon Pryce defecting to rugby union for at least another four years.

Pryce, 26, whose brother Karl, 21, has just returned to league with Wigan after a largely unfulfilled year in union with Gloucester, has hinted in the past that he might have followed the same route.

Gripping: Leon Pryce goes on the charge

But since moving to St Helens from his hometown club Bradford two seasons ago, Pryce has taken his game to another level and helped Great Britain to a 3-0 Test whitewash over New Zealand.

Saints moved to head off any approaches from union by agreeing a new four-year contract with the player, who had a year left under his existing deal. Pryce, who can play wing, centre or stand off, is seen as a key man in Saints' bid to re-establish themselves as the top side in Super League in Daniel Anderson's last season as coach.

The club have also given long-serving loose forward Paul Sculthorpe a boost as he fights his way back to fitness after two years of injury problems. The 30-year-old, who has been given a one-year deal in his testimonial year, keeps the captaincy this coming season.

Sculthorpe, who ruptured an achilles tendon on his return from two knee operations, has told the BBC he may reconsider his decision to stop playing international rugby league if he can return to form and fitness with St Helens.
