Quickfire Quincy helps Birmingham gun down Barnsley

Qunicy Owusu-Abeyie is a young footballer still looking for somewhere to hang his boots on a permanent basis.

The 22-year-old forward with a rather exotic name — ‘call me Quincy for convenience’ —  has bounced from Ajax to Arsenal, from Spartak Moscow to Celta Vigo.

He is now on loan with Birmingham from Spartak, who also sent him to Celta Vigo on a short-term basis.

If he continues to produce the lightning quick, nimble-footed performance which made him an instant hit with supporters in this win, he may be offered the chance to stay at St Andrew’s and become a hero.

This Dutch-born Ghana international has quickly established himself as equal to veteran Kevin Phillips in the fans’ popularity stakes.

Birmingham supporters have fallen for the 35-year-old former England forward who has paved his entry into their Championship challenge with important goals, the latest being the opener in this match after 11 minutes.

But it was the name ‘Quincy’ that was chanted as the team kept their 100 per cent record.

Quincy is feeling very much at home with Birmingham.

He said: ‘When I heard they were interested in taking me on loan, I was happy to join even though other clubs were showing an interest.

‘I wanted another shot at playing in the Barclays Premier League after being at Arsenal and not being able to break into the first team.

'I knew of Birmingham’s qualities and that they were strongly tipped to be promoted this season and I am hoping to play my part.’

He insists it is nothing to do with being desperate to leave Spartak Moscow, where he has played in bitterly cold temperatures.

He added: ‘I moved from Arsenal to Spartak because I believed it would be good experience and that, if I did well in Moscow, I might get the chance to play in the Champions League.

‘But I always wanted to come back to England and play at the top level and now I have another chance.’

Birmingham can extend his loan spell beyond January until the end of the season with an option to complete a permanent deal.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish said: ‘As manager, you look for new players to come in and make a difference and he did that on this occasion.

'He’s very exciting, quick and with a trick or two.

'He doesn’t run up blind alleys and he can only get better.’

Quincy’s cross for Garry O’Connor’s headed second goal in the 45th minute was perfection.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey had nothing but frustration to reflect upon.

He has been a busy man this summer, bringing in several new players.

But Barnsley have not won in four games and chances went begging against Birmingham.

Davey said: ‘It was a disappointing result after we had a lot of the play.

'Frustration is my greatest emotion because we made basic errors which have to be stopped. And quickly.

'I’ve never lost four in a row and that means our next league game against Derby is massive.’
