Quinn pledges to land big names to help Sunderland secure Premier status

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has promised supporters he will land the big  names required to move the club into the middle bracket of Barclays Premier  League clubs next season.

Roy Keane successfully fought off relegation last term, their first back in the  top flight and then asked for £50million from the Drumaville Consortium who  finance Sunderland.

So far, no movement has been made in the transfer market despite approaches for  Celtic’s £10 million-rated left winger Aidan McGeady but Quinn said: “We're  happy to stay silent and people will have to trust us that we're doing the best  things for the club.

“A lot of things are happening behind the scenes, but players are away and it  is very hard to get these quality players.

Niall Quinn:

Niall Quinn: "A lot of things are happening behind the scenes"

“People are probably waiting and anxious that we make signings, but we have to  do it properly and we have to get quality now. There is no point in signing  players to keep people happy. We have to make sure we get the ones we're after.

“It is not my job to say who we will try to get. It's my job to try to get the  money together and see if we can unlock players. Roy is adamant that he is  keeping his cards close to his chest rather than us talking about things  (publicly) and just disappointing people if they don't come off.

“Roy and I had a good chat the other night looking at the state of play,  talking about the various inquiries we've made and what the chances are of  achieving the kind of player that we need at the club. When I played, I never  realised how hard it would be get players who would really improve the team.

“The transfer market has not really got going yet. It's a bit like the housing  market, it's a bit stuck. I am sure we will get going, there are bits and  pieces happening.”
Keane wants six high profile signings this summer and is prepared to off-load  twice that number as he attempts to streamline his squad.
