Radcliffe facing TV blackout over deals

Paula Radcliffe, the one British athlete whose competitive appearances still excite spectators, sponsors and television, is facing exclusion from all three televised meetings on these shores this summer.

UK Athletics confirmed yesterday that their commercial partner, Fast Track, have been instructed not to negotiate deals for Radcliffe to run in Glasgow, Sheffield and Crystal Palace while she refuses to sign a centralised contract.

Radcliffe, 33, would not have been ready to run in the first at Glasgow on Sunday because of lack of preparation due to injury but her absence from the London Grand Prix in early August would be a major blow to sponsors Norwich Union and BBC Television.

Jon Ridgeon, from Fast Track, said: "She is the biggest marquee name in British athletics. Obviously we would like her to be there."

When Ed Warner took over as chairman of UKA he said an agreement with Britain's only individual world champion was one of his priorities, but he admitted that he is still in negotiation with her. The problem is reconciling contracts she has signed with personal sponsors. Warner said Radcliffe would not be a special exception to the ruling that the uncontracted cannot compete in their paid meeting.

It is also increasingly likely that Radcliffe will choose not to defend her marathon world title in Osaka in August.

Dave Collins, UKA's performance director, is unconcerned. He said: "I am not personally worried about rushing her. It would be good to have her at the world championships but this is a programme built on Olympic success and I would prefer her to be right for that."

Radcliffe is one of 12 athletes among the 37 on the 2008 Olympic Lottery funding programme who is currently injured.
