Ramos plots revolt: New coach keen to bring La Liga men to Spurs

Juande Ramos will be at White Hart Lane today to be unveiled as Spurs manager in succession to the axed Martin Jol — and he is expected to press for the recruitment of a new goalkeeper and central defender to boost Tottenham's ailing defence.

England No 1 Paul Robinson is likely to be the biggest casualty of the Ramos Revolution, with Sevilla's Andres Palop, 34, already the target for his former boss.

Sevilla's France centre-half,Julien Escude,is also in the frame for a move as Ramos discusses the new make-up of the team with the club's sporting director, Damien Comolli.

Ramos spent 20 minutes saying an emotional farewell to his players at Sevilla's Sanchez Pizjuan stadium yesterday morning before flying to London to complete the final stages of contract negotiations with the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Sevilla's president, Jose Maria del Nido, accepted the inevitable departure of his head coach but is likely to press for £2million in compensation from Spurs for Ramos, along with the fitness trainer Marcos Alvarez, who has also quit Spain to join the north London club.

Del Nido said: 'I don't want to talk about Juande Ramos. He brought a letter saying that he wanted to resign. We wanted him to stay until the summer. We gave him our total support.'

Ramos, who is bringing in the former Chelsea and Spurs midfielder Gus Poyet as his No 2, will not take charge for the match against Blackburn this afternoon. Reserve-team coach Clive Allen is preparing the team for the match.

But Ramos, who has previously coached exclusively in Spain at clubs such as Rayo Vallecano, Espanyol and Malaga, is expected to push for players that he knows from the Spanish League when Tottenham undergo a major clear-out in the January transfer window.

However, Comolli will have to authorise any moves as the sporting director and had already begun searching for a defender to improve Spurs at the back.

Ramos, who won the UEFA Cup in 2006 and 2007, as well as the Copa del Rey last season, the UEFA Super Cup and the Spanish equivalent of the Community Shield, has been Sevilla's most successful coach.
