Ramos snub leaves City still in search of a boss

Manchester City's search for a new manager was dealt a blow last night when prime target Juande Ramos suggested it would be very difficult to leave Spanish Cup finalists Sevilla.

As former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was last night locked in talks with his advisers over how to save his £90million bid for the club, City's board were continuing their search for a successor to Stuart Pearce.

Ramos: Happy at Seville

Sevilla coach Ramos is a serious target but last night the coach of the UEFA Cup winners revealed that he expects to stay in Spain.

Ramos's team, who could still pip Real Madrid and Barcelona for the title, finish their league season against Villarreal this weekend already assured of a Champions League spot — and that will trigger a oneyear contract extension until June 2008.

Ramos said: "I am happy in Seville because I have the chance to make the very most of my career. That is a dream.

"The extension is there, although I do need to ask some questions. That will have to wait until the end of June because now we play for our lives in two big matches.

"To work in England is a challenge for any coach. It is a pleasure to see my name in the pages of the English papers but I think it would be very complicated for me to leave."

City will not give up their pursuit of Ramos, 52, particularly as it was his advisers who contacted them once Pearce was sacked four weeks ago.

But they are facing a battle to recruit a man who is also interesting Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

One theory is Ramos has been using City to try to whip up interest in Spain and to ensure an extension to his Sevilla contract is put in place sooner rather than later.

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes will also reject any approach from City.

The club are now pessimistic that Thaksin will find the money to buy the club after having his assets frozen by the Thai government.

But sources close to the former politician said last night an offer could still be made.
