Ramos: Tottenham fans will have to be patient

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos has admitted Tottenham will struggle to challenge for the Champions League because they do not have the spending power of England's big four.

Ramos has seen Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.

Millions needed: Juande Ramos says Tottenham must spend big if they want to qualify for the Champions League

The Spanish coach had a taste of managing in the European Cup with his Sevilla side earlier in the season and is desperate to test his managerial skills against the best teams in Europe.

Ramos has wasted no time transforming Tottenham both on and off the pitch since he took charge of the club back in October and steered the club to their first piece of silverware since 1999 when they beat Chelsea to win the Carling Cup.

But the Tottenham boss has warned his own supporters that any dreams of breaking into the Champions League will have to take a backseat for a while until they can attract the best players in Europe to the club.

Ramos said: "It comes down to budgets at the end of the day. Budgets have a lot to do with this. The four teams involved in the final stages of the Champions League have the highest budgets.

"Therefore they are able to buy the best star players, they have the best options to buy those players.

"Now and then there can be a team that can break into those four as a surprise but it's very difficult and it all comes down to budget. We need to buy the best players."
