Ramos: Tottenham made me a dizzying offer

Juande Ramos today revealed he turned down a "dizzying" offer from Tottenham to replace Martin Jol as manager in order to stay at Sevilla.

Ramos has publicly admitted for the first time that he was in talks over taking charge at White Hart Lane and is believed to have been offered a three-year deal worth around £58,000 a week.

Out with the Jol: Ramos and Jol talk tactics

Spurs, who were forced to make an embarrassing U-turn and back Jol after Ramos rejected them, are trying to save face by insisting the Spaniard wasn't offered the job.

However, Ramos said today during a press conference, which lasted an hour: "I haven't met with Tottenham's representatives, but with a mediator that would then speak to the club.

"Regarding this person that came on behalf of Spurs, he showed me an excellent, dizzying offer, but I'm under contract and my decision is to fulfil it.

"I was not interested in the offer because I am in a very interesting project with Sevilla. I haven't spoken to the club because there was no possibility of accepting it."

Spurs were caught out last Friday after vice-chairman Paul Kemsley and club secretary John Alexander were seen leaving a hotel in Seville where Ramos and his agent were also present.

But a club statement said: "No individual was, or has been offered, the position of manager/ coach at this club while that position has been held by Martin Jol."

Chairman Daniel Levy told Jol his job was safe for now in a meeting at the training ground last night, but only after Ramos had informed him of his decision to stay in Spain and see out the last year of his contract.

As Standard Sport revealed yesterday, Ramos was not ready to quit Sevilla with them being one match away from qualifying for the Champions League group stages.

Whether Jol stays in charge remains to be seen. Levy has left him in no doubt of what he wants, insisting in a club statement that he is "an ambitious chairman,we are an ambitious club and we want Champions League football at White Hart Lane."

Jol, who has two years left on a contract worth £38,500-a-week, has been offered a way out of the shambles at Spurs by the Dutch Football Association, who are believed to have contacted him about the role of national coach.

In a further twist, when quizzed on reports that Chelsea had told former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello they wanted Ramos to take charge at the end of the season, the Sevilla boss replied: "I have a good relationship with Fabio, but I've no knowledge of that situation."
