Ramos will be given £40million for Spurs raid

Juande Ramos will be handed a £40million summer transfer kitty to turn Tottenham's cup heroes into Barclays Premier League title challengers.

Tottenham's board are ready to back their manager with hard cash after Ramos steered his side to a deserved Carling Cup Final win over Chelsea.

Happy days: Ramos enjoys Cup victory and will now be allowed to spend big

The Spaniard's thoughts have already turned to making it a trophy double for Spurs this season by winning the UEFA Cup. If he is successful, that would be a third triumph in succession in the competition for the former Sevilla manager.

But far from limiting his focus to this campaign, Ramos is already plotting a close-season recruitment drive which will see Spurs capable of challenging the top flight's big four.

Ending Tottenham's lengthy search for a specialist left winger ranks as a priority for Ramos and director of football Damien Comolli. Spurs failed yet again in a move for Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing in January, the England winger subsequently signing a new five-year deal at the Riverside.

But Ramos is understood to be far keener on raiding his homeland to solve Tottenham's problems. Espanyol's Albert Riera is a target, although the 25-year-old's £18m release clause may prove prohibitive. Another option is Sevilla's wonderkid Diego Capel, who will be allowed to talk to clubs if a bid matches his £9m buy-out clause.

Negotiations with Ramos's former club will not be without their problems given the acrimonious nature of his departure, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also tracking the 20-year-old.

Ramos remains in the market for a new goalkeeper despite Paul Robinson keeping his place for the Wembley showpiece. Portsmouth's in-form David James has emerged as a top target despite being 37.

However, Harry Redknapp will battle to keep James, whose fitness levels have prompted the Portsmouth manager to describe his keeper as 'a freak'.

A more viable option could be Espanyol's Carlos Kameni, who is available for a knockdown £4.5m and, at just 24, has his best years ahead of him.

Ramos is also keen to strengthen central midfield and will hope to revive January's move for Juventus's Tiago after the Portugal international's £50,000-a-week wage demands scuppered a £9m transfer. Ramos has also inquired about Valencia's out-of-favour midfielder David Albelda.

Skipper Ledley King was outstanding at Wembley in his first match back since the 5-1 semi-final win over Arsenal. But with questions remaining over his long-term fitness, Ramos could yet revive his interest in Racing Santander's £13.5m-rated Argentina international Ezequiel Garay or Espanyol's Daniel Jarque, who is available at a more modest £6.8m.

The future of Dimitar Berbatov will impact on the calibre of striker Ramos chooses to recruit. However, speaking after Sunday's win, the Bulgarian hinted he is willing to stay as long as Tottenham's ambitions match his own. 'I am here, I want to win things and let's hope today was the first of many,' replied Berbatov when asked about his future.

But should the pull of the likes of United prove too much for Berbatov, then a move for Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito is a possibility despite a prohibitive buy-out clause set at £75m to ward off potential suitors.

One thing is for certain, Ramos is unlikely to have trouble attracting talent given his growing reputation and the ringing endorsements from his current squad for their manager.

Berbatov said: 'He is a winner. The way he works with us, speaks with us, he's like a psychologist because he talks to us so well. If we keep listening to him, we can go places.'

Fellow striker Robbie Keane said: 'What he has done in such a short space of time is no fluke because he did it at Sevilla in a short time too.

'It's amazing. We've just won the Carling Cup and we're already talking about winning the UEFA Cup. It shows how hungry the players are.'

King and Jermaine Jenas also revealed their desire to keep up the winning habit.

King said: 'I want this to be the first of many for us and I know it can be. One trophy in nine years is not good enough for this club. With the squad we've got, we should be producing this kind of performance and this level of excitement for the fans a lot more.'

Jenas added: 'Afterwards the manager kept saying to me anything is possible. That's what he believes and he has instilled that in us. For all of us here, this must only be the start. If we keep putting performances like this, these days will keep coming.'
