Rangers star Hutton attracting Newcastle's interest as Spurs wait in wings

Newcastle could be set to make the first move in the race for Alan Hutton's signature after a scout took in his pulsating performance for Scotland against Italy in last weekend's Euro 2008 qualifier.

The Rangers full-back's rapid rise since Walter Smith returned to Ibrox has alerted clubs across Europe, but the St James' Park outfit were first to declare an interest last night after Paul Montgomery's Hampden report got tongues wagging.

Now Hutton is firmly on the Magpies' radar as Montgomery, who is a friend of Scotland boss Alex McLeish, declared: "He was brought into Ibrox when Alex was in charge and I have kept an eye on him since."

Sam Allardyce's team have not had their defensive problems to seek this season and he could see Hutton as a potential solution.

Montgomery's main brief was to watch Italy striker Luca Toni but his report back to the Newcastle boss can't fail to have highlighted Hutton as one of the game's key performers.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham have also been monitoring his progress, although Rangers have no intention of selling a player who has become one of the SPL's hottest properties and a regular in the international side.
