Rangers sunk by late Stuttgart strike

Rangers manager Walter Smith last night called for one last push from his players as they bid to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

This defeat means Rangers need at least a draw against Lyon, whom they beat away, in the final group match at Ibrox on December 12 to make into the last 16.

Smith said: "We have a big match to look forward to now. If we show the same endeavour we have throughout the campaign, I will be pleased."

Rangers took the lead through Charlie Adam before Cacau hauled Stuttgart back into the game.

The Bundesliga champions went ahead thanks to Pavel Pardo's strike only for Barry Ferguson to level the scores.

But Smith's men were sunk when Ciprian Marica snatched the winner five minutes from time.

The Gers boss added: "We are obviously disappointed to lose the game. I felt we lost a bad goal just before half-time, then Stuttgart started the second half strongly and got in front."

A blow for Smith was the loss of two players — Lee McCulloch, who is expected to make a quick recovery, and DaMarcus Beasley, who was carried off and could be out for some time.
