Rangers veteran Weir not ruling anything out just yet

Rangers hope to cement David Weir's place in their defence for another season by tying the veteran into a new one-year deal this week.

Manager Walter Smith has always been convinced that the 38-year-old, a stand-out alongside Carlos Cuellar during last year's season of excess and success, would be able to make a major contribution to another campaign.

He made 60 appearances for Rangers last year, plus five for Scotland.

But Smith had been concerned that outside considerations - Weir's family are still based down south - would persuade the former Everton centre-half to abandon his Ibrox adventure in favour of something closer to home.

Agent David Lockwood said: 'There will be a meeting with Rangers this week to discuss matters concerning David Weir. We're not ruling anything in or out.

'Rangers want David to stay at Ibrox - and he is certainly not ruling out staying.'

While Smith, who completed the permanent signing of defender Andy Webster earlier this month, is confident Weir can be persuaded to extend his topflight career, he will face a battle to hang on to Kris Boyd.

The 24-year-old has been given assurances that Smith sees him as a key part of his plans for next season but, with Kyle Lafferty, Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka all new recruits to the Rangers forward line, the former Kilmarnock striker may be tempted by the right move.

FA Cup finalists Cardiff, having already seen a £2.5million offer for Boyd rejected, are preparing an improved bid for the player, who is also on the radar of newly-promoted Hull City.

Meanwhile, Smith is hopeful of signing goalkeeper Allan McGregor on a new four-year contract in a bid to ward off interest from Premiership suitors, including Spurs.

Rangers have lined up a pre-season friendly at Ballymena United on July 17.
