Ranking points revolution to give Murray a Davis Cup incentive

The Davis Cup is to be given added spice from next year after the game's top officials bowed to mounting pressure and agreed to award ranking points for world group ties - a move which should ensure Andy Murray participates more for Great Britain.

The decision is designed to make sure top players take part in the elite section of a competition instead of opting out to concentrate on collecting tournament points.

Missing Murray: The British team which faced Argentina, minus Andy Murray

It should also serve as an incentive for Britain to get back into the top 16 by winning their play-off match in September. Murray, the British No1, pulled out of the last match against Argentina but is now more likely to commit himself to the cause.

Also from 2009, the men will join the women at Eastbourne in a combined tournament to replace the traditional pre-Wimbledon event in Nottingham.
