Brazilian midfielder Taddei increased Roma's aggregate lead to 3-1 and though Raul levelled on the night Mirko Vucinic confirmed Roma's passage into the last eight with a diving header in the final minute.
"For me this isn't a real defeat," said Schuster. "We didn't qualify, that is all. Until their first goal the game was ours but we couldn't find the net. The red card did us a lot of damage."
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said: "Real tried to be aggressive but my team gave nothing away."
