Real crash out on night of drama against Roma

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster tried to brush off his side's Champions League exit to Roma. The Spanish champions went out 4-2 on aggregate after losing 2-1 at the Bernabeu last night in a match that was goalless when Real's Pepe was sent off for a foul in the 71st minute.

Brazilian midfielder Taddei increased Roma's aggregate lead to 3-1

Brazilian midfielder Taddei increased Roma's aggregate lead to 3-1 and though Raul levelled on the night Mirko Vucinic confirmed Roma's passage into the last eight with a diving header in the final minute.

"For me this isn't a real defeat," said Schuster. "We didn't qualify, that is all. Until their first goal the game was ours but we couldn't find the net. The red card did us a lot of damage."

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said: "Real tried to be aggressive but my team gave nothing away."

Future's orange: Schalke delight after Porto are beaten in a penalty shoot-out

Ten-man Porto were knocked out by Schalke, who won a penalty shoot-out 4-1 in Portugal. The Germans led 1-0 from the first leg — but even though Porto lost Jorge Fucile to a red card in the 82nd minute for a foul, Lisandro Lopez scored a superb goal to take the match into extra-time.

With Liverpool going to Inter Milan on Tuesday with a 2-0 first leg lead, England's trio of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United will be joined in next week's quarter-final draw by Spanish giants Barcelona and Turkey's Fenerbahce.
