Real Madrid boss Schuster taunts United by insisting: Ronaldo will play for us one day

Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster has taunted Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson by insisting Cristiano Ronaldo will play for the Spanish champions at some point in his career.

The Portugal winger has been constantly linked with a move to the Primera Liga and immediately after the Champions League Final stated he would not leave - honouring his five-year contract at Old Trafford that runs out in 2012.

However, 12 hours later Ronaldo said he makes no promises to anyone on the subject  - offering some hope for Real who have made no secret of their desire to sign him.

Manchester United are adamant they will never sell their prized asset, even if the reported offers of £75m are to be believed but Schuster is confident he will eventually grace the Bernabeu.

The German told Spanish TV: "Sooner or later, Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the white shirt. I hope that it is when I am still at the club."

And Schuster, who led Real to a second straight Spanish title this season, claims the Spanish side cannot afford to miss out on the free-scoring forward should he leave Manchester.

He added: "If there is any chance of signing him, Real Madrid have to try it."
