The Spanish league leaders are desperate to land the Portuguese star and are willing to pay him £160,000 a week - making him the highest paid player in the world, according to the Daily Star.
Show me the money: Cristiano Ronaldo is wanted by Europe's top clubs
The 23-year-old only signed a new £120,000-a-week five-year deal with the Red Devils this time last year and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has regularly insisted he wants his playmaker to stay.
But Madrid president Ramon Calderon said over the weekend at a fans forum: "To sign Cristiano Ronaldo is a dream, but it is not impossible."
The winger has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season so far and his agent Jorge Mendes said: "Cristiano Ronaldo is the player most desired in the world.
"All the big clubs want to him, but he is currently with Manchester United and his future depends on this club.
"I am a football agent and I have meetings with people from Madrid and Barcelona all the time, but it is not always about Cristiano."
Brazil star Kaka is reportedly the highest-paid football in the world. Italian giants AC Milan pay the forward in the region of £130,000 a week.
