Real to turn up the heat with £20m Robben bid

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is adamant Robben is not for sale but Real president Ramon Calderon is equally convinced his top target will be moving to the Bernabeu this week after increasing his initial £14m offer.

Heading to Madrid: Arjen Robben
Calderon has been encouraged by the fact that Robben was left out of the Chelsea side again against Rangers on Saturday and he is also expected to miss the trip to Brondby tomorrow, although the club insist his absence is because of a knee injury.
The Real president is believed to have struck a deal for personal terms with Robben's father and agent, Hans, but Chelsea sources insisted yesterday the former PSV Eindhoven winger will leave only in the unlikely event of Mourinho performing an about-turn.
In addition, Real coach Bernd Schuster has outlined his admiration for Michael Ballack, saying he is exactly the kind of player he wants to provide a link between midfield and attack.
Ballack is also sidelined after undergoing ankle surgery and will miss the start of the season, but that has not stopped Chelsea valuing him at £27m to ward off Real.
Steve Clarke, meanwhile, has insisted Chelsea are on their way to ironing out the glitches ahead of Sunday's Wembley Community Shield against Manchester United.
Mourinho enacted his new lower profile by sending his assistant to meet the media following his side's 2-0 defeat by Rangers in Glasgow. On the back of an uninspiring draw against Feyenoord, it fell to the Scot to accentuate the positives.
The Stamford Bridge squad fly to Copenhagen today for their final overseas warm-up and, after being beaten by last season's Scottish Premier League runners-up, Clarke said: 'We have to think about the match on Tuesday at Brondby now. We have to assess this game and take what we need from it and address it.
"We'll hopefully win the match in Copenhagen and go into the Community Shield in a positive frame of mind. But we'll certainly be ready for it."
There were, Clarke said, definite pluses to be taken from Ibrox in the displays of the club's summer signings from the Premiership. He said: 'I thought Steve Sidwell was the best player, he was excellent. He is a good acquisition for us who strengthens the squad and gives us options. When we play a flat 4-4-2 it's a system he knows inside out — he has played it all his life.
'He did well for Reading and he'll do well for us. I also thought Tal Ben Haim was excellent in the first half. He made a few mistakes towards the end through fatigue, but don't forget he played three positions.
'He started the game at centre back and moved to left back before finishing at right back. We did that with a lot of players. We're looking to take something from the game by analysing different things.
'As a consequence you suffer as a team and lose your shape a bit, and I think that happened a bit more in the second half at Rangers than we would have liked."
Late breakaway goals from Nacho Novo and a deflected effort from Slovak striker Filip Sebo delighted a near-50,000 crowd at Ibrox.
The return of England left back Ashley Cole as a second-half substitute was welcome, however, and Clarke said: "We got Ashley back and it was a good training session for John Terry, who hadn't trained for three days with a broken toe.
"So for him to get 90 minutes at that tempo was good. Claudio Pizarro also came in despite the fact he has trained with the group only four times."
