Record-breaker Giggs planning for more nights of European glory

The former Wales captain showed his love of the big stage by scoring in lastnight's 6-5 penalty shootout victory against Chelsea after stepping off thebench in Moscow.

It was a special moment for Giggs as he collected his second Champions Leaguewinners' medal after also playing in 1999.

United had to dig deep after Frank Lampard cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo's opener and were indebted to goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who blocked Nicolas Anelka's penalty to give them victory.

Giggs said: "I want nights like this again. We deserved it, we've been the best team. "The first half, we dominated. The second half, they had chances but we held our nerve in the end. "Penalties can be a lottery. It's how close the teams have been all season."

Giggs, who overtook Sir Bobby Charlton's appearance record, added: "It is a proud achievement for myself and my family. But, in the end, it's all about winning trophies.

"The Champions League is the number one competition. It is where you get tested as an individual and as a team.

"You are up against the best players in Europe and the best teams in Europe. Having tasted success in 1999, you want to go back and get that feeling again.

"It has been nine years, so our success has been overdue, which is why I am very happy."

Giggs also has 10 Premier League winners' medals in his trophy cabinet after United retained their title on the final day of the domestic season.

Ronaldo, however, was distraught at missing a penalty in the shootout after making the breakthrough in the 26th minute with his 42nd goal of the season - a powerful header.

So his relief was evident at the end of a dramatic night in Moscow when the club clinched a glorious double.

Fifty years on from the Munich air disaster and 40 years after their first European Cup triumph, it was an emotional night.

Ronaldo said: "I thought I was going to lose. I score the goal and miss the penalty... the worst day of my life.

"But the lads did a proper job and I feel very proud for them. We deserved to win the Champions League.

"It means everything for me. I looked forward to winning this competition -and we won the Premier League. It's a magnificent season for me."

Van der Sar became part of a select band by winning the European Cup with different clubs.

Thirteen years ago, he helped Ajax triumph but a year later they lost to Juventus on penalties.

The Dutch goalkeeper saved Anelka's spot-kick after John Terry earlier missed a chance to win it for Chelsea at 4-4.

Van der Sar said: "Twelve years ago, I lost on penalties and we've won it now. It's unbelievable. We deserve it. It's fantastic."

Terry clipped the outside of the post with Van der Sar beaten and United skipper Rio Ferdinand admitted he thought their chances had gone.

"I was thinking he's going to score," Ferdinand said. "He's a great penalty taker normally but he slipped.

"Unfortunately, someone's got to lose and tonight it's them."
