Red wait for Julian White

Julian White's Lions fate could hinge on an RFU disciplinary meeting tomorrow when he will be punished for punching fellow England prop Andrew Sheridan.

The 35-year-old faces a ban of up to eight weeks after flooring Sheridan during Leicester's 37-31 win over Sale on Saturday.

The maximum suspension would rule White out for the rest of the season and the opening phase of the Lions' tour of South Africa, which begins with a match against Highveld XV on 30 May. Even if he is given the minimum two-week ban then his worrying disciplinary record - this was his fourth red card in seven years - could count against him when head coach Ian McGeechan draws up his squad.

Leicester's acting head coach Richard Cockerill refused to be drawn on what kind of punishment White could expect, saying: "If he's done it and he's got a red then he will get the punishment that fits the crime."

The tour party will be announced a fortnight tomorrow while the first of the three Tests against the Springboks is in Durban on 20 June.
